Food Photography & Equipment

I started blogging in June 2013 (originally as FancifulFoodie) and shared that blog with a few friends.  At that point, I just took quick photos with my iPhone (see the photos on the older posts).   My current photos, however, are taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T5i (a.k.a. the 700D), which is a DSLR camera, and a 50mm lens (Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM).  Given my job, I have to do much of my cooking and photography in the evenings after work.  But, not surprisingly, our house does not have enough natural light then.  Unfortunately, the lighting in my kitchen is borderline even during daylight hours.  Therefore, we (my husband and I work together on the food photography) have experimented, and continue to experiment, with a variety of lighting setups, including use of continuous lights and strobes with softboxes.

I am happy to answer any questions about our equipment, lighting, mistakes we have made, and tips.  I have learned that there is never an end to what you can learn and improve when it comes to photography.

Starting a Food Blog

In the summer of 2013, I started my original website called FancifulFoodie.com, which I primarily shared with friends. I posted favorite recipes and blogged about my cooking adventures and experiments.  During the first year, I have learned a lot about blogging and have learned the importance of good food photography. This past summer, when I decided to actually jump into food blogging head first, rather than just dipping my toe in the shallow end as I had been doing, I realized that I needed to put what I had learned into practice and that I still have a lot more to figure out. First, I wanted the website’s name to better reflect what this site means to me, so I changed it to FoodieOasis.  Second, my husband and I invested in a good camera, lenses, and lighting equipment. In the coming weeks and months, I will provide more info on the lessons that I learned over the past year starting a food blog. I hope you will join me on this journey.  I am not sure where it will take us, but I can’t wait to find out!
